The era of 'drone warfare' has officially begun — but South Korea's defense against drones remains virtually non-existent.

The Achilles’ heel of Korea’s drone technology? Heavy reliance on Chinese components.
Core parts like high-performance navigation systems and imaging sensors are mostly imported from China, leaving the country vulnerable to supply chain collapse during wartime or geopolitical conflicts.

In response, the government is belatedly taking action.

1. Korea Launches 'K-Drone Supply Chain Initiative'
On June 17 in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, the Korea Aerospace Administration (KAA) officially launched the "K-Drone Airframe Supply Chain Initiative", aiming to build a self-sufficient domestic drone ecosystem through collaboration among government, academia, industry, and research institutes.

According to KAA, China is the biggest variable in Korea’s drone industry.
Worryingly, China has recently begun restricting exports of key drone components.

2 U.S. and Europe Are Racing Ahead
Global powers aren’t waiting.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to boost mass production of commercial and military drones at low cost.

Meanwhile, France is in talks with Renault to manufacture military drones for Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia.

With drones proving decisive in both the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Iran conflicts, they are now considered a core element of modern warfare.

3. Experts Warn: “This Is Korea’s Golden Time for Drone Independence”
At the event, experts from industry, academia, and research sectors emphasized:

“If we don’t act now, the window will close.
This is Korea’s golden time to secure drone autonomy.”

4. AI Drones & Strategic Supply Chain Roadmap
Moving forward, the KAA plans to spearhead development of Korean-style AI drones and expand the supply-demand infrastructure across industries.

John Lee, Head of the Mission Directorate at KAA, stated:

“Drones are a crucial technology for protecting public safety and supporting industry.
We aim to achieve both technological innovation and market expansion to build a sustainable national drone ecosystem.”
